Exploration into the Unknowns: Julius von Bismarck e Tamara Vázquez Schröder
Another discussion on Art and Science in the tenth meeting in the cycle of conversations ‘La Scienza a regola d’Arte’, the result of the productive co-operation of MASI Lugano and IBSA Foundation for scientific research.
After the previous meeting held in May 2022, the artist Julius von Bismarck and the physicist Tamara Vázquez Schröder were the key players in this new conversation that had take place on 17 November at 18:30 at the LAC in Lugano.

What are the unknowns, the mysteries of nature and reality that remain unexplained? What are the particles still hidden in nature, waiting to be discovered and understood? Can the perspectives of art and science shed light on the unknown? Julius von Bismarck, multidisciplinary artist, Dr Tamara Vázquez Schröder, CERN Research Physicist, in conversation with Mónica Bello, Curator and Head of Arts at CERN, will discuss the themes they explore in their respective fields of research.
This dialogue adds other interesting views to the ‘La Scienza a regola d’Arte’ project which has enabled two disciplines like Art and Science, that have always worked together on the spread of culture, to converse in a profitable exchange of points of view since 2017.
MASI and IBSA Foundation extend their spheres of interest and in-depth analysis to topics apparently distant from their institutional mandates through this initiative, thus supporting a situation where the relationship between art, science, technology and research is now so close that it is often inseparable.
Julius von Bismarck (born in 1983) whit his multidisciplinary practice explores contemporary dialectics of nature and civilisation, knowledge and cultural imagination, individuals’ behaviour and social norms. His visual vocabulary widely transposes encounters with elemental forces that exceed human perception and reason. Employing a diverse range of mediums including photography, film, installation, sculpture, performance, and landscape, each of his works is shaped by research-driven experimentations with crossovers in the fields of physics, technology, and social sciences.
Tamara Vázquez Schröder is an experimental particle physicist working with the ATLAS experiment. She joined the ATLAS Collaboration in 2010 as a PhD student with the University of Goettingen, and worked as a post-doc with McGill University until 2018 and as a CERN Research Fellow until mid 2020. Since August 2020, she is a CERN Junior Research Staff member working on measurements and searches of physics processes involving top quarks, Higgs boson and new particles. She is also working on developments of the ATLAS Trigger system. She has been involved with various arts@CERN projects and events, promoting a conversation between art and science.
Mónica Bello (born 1973) is a Spanish curator and art historian. In her curatorial practice, she has focused on the crossovers between disciplines. Since 2015 she is the Curator and Head of Arts at CERN at the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Geneva. At CERN she leads and designs the art programs: the artistic residencies, the art commissions, and the exhibitions. She is the curator of the Icelandic Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale in support of artist Sigurður Guðjónsson.
